Why does Mantle exist?  At Mantle our goal is to support men to be better partners, fathers, sons, brothers, colleagues and friends, and to improve mental health outcomes for men.  We do this by providing telehealth services at a time and a place that best suits men, thus removing some of the barriers to receiving professional and targeted 1-1 psychological support.

In a lot of cases, psychological support for men appears to be missing the mark. Recent research by Seidler and colleagues (2018; 2020; 2021) indicates that approximately 43% of men reportedly regret asking for help and drop out of therapy prematurely; 25% after just one appointment because the support they received did not meet their expectations.  Between 30-50% of men have had contact with a health provider in the month before suicide. Many men in this country, and the world over, are inadvertently discouraged from taking positive steps to improve their mental health due to long wait times, an overall lack of accessibility, and services that haven’t fully considered the unique preferences of men when it comes to engaging and staying engaged in professional support.

We at Mantle don’t profess that we are the only solution, but we want to continue to promote exploration and change on what works best for men. We believe that too many men are falling through the cracks, and that we need to find better ways to engage with men. Mantle wants to bring contemporary men’s mental health research to life through a service that improves the lives of men by focussing on helping them to better understand and manage life’s challenges. The hope is that this process will also have a positive impact on the lives of those living with men. We are committed to giving men an optimal experience of psychological support through our team of psychologists; trained specifically to better understand and adapt their approach to the needs of men and to help connect men to mental health supports appropriate to their needs.

Mantle wants to save men’s lives, but we also want to improve men’s lives. We are passionate about early intervention and prevention through connection, and we have a growing network of Mantle ‘mates’, partners, and men’s health associations, that we actively promote, refer to, and support. We believe that no one organisation has all the answers, nor provides all the solutions required for men’s mental health and, as a sector, we need to get better at educating men about their options if we are to make a genuine impact across society. We are driven to improve interconnectedness and elevate awareness of available resources and support options across the men’s health landscape, with reciprocity being a key value of our organisation.

We have recently added additional psychologists to our team which has seen increased availability and reduced wait times for our services. If you want to refer on to us, or you’re interested in finding out more about the service and partnerships, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr Dave Anthony, Co-Founder of Mantle at [email protected] for further information.
